Knaith is a small Lincolnshire village 3 miles south of Gainsborough. It enjoys an entry in the Domesday Book, proudly claiming 3 households, 25 acres of meadow and 26 acres of woodland. It also boasts Knaith Hall, a Grade II listed 15th century building. In the middle of the 19th century the village held a steeplechase meeting on Friday 17th March 1865 on a course admirably suited to chasing just a short distance from Lea station. The feature race was the Knaith open chase for the Prince of Wales Cup, and after a hectic struggle Mr Glover’s Malton claimed victory in the hands of Brocklesby. There are no further records of chasing taking place in the village. |
